The Roman Catholic Bishop of Perth, the Right Reverend Matthew Gibney in 1891, acquired the area that today comprises the suburb of ‘Churchlands’. Gibney was far-sighted in his acquisition of land for the Church, and this area became known as 'Church Lands' as a result of it being owned by the Church.

Churchlands features many amenities and facilities for its residents to enjoy, with many schools in the area, including Churchlands Primary School, Churchlands Senior High School, Hale School and Newman College. With Herdsman Lake at its eastern border, the suburb also provides accessibility to many bird watching points.
