Bright and cheerful and a real summer favourite, sunflowers traditionally only came with bright yellow petals surrounding a dark centre. New varieties are now available which have pale brown, orange, maroon or even striped petals, and green-yellow centres. There are even double-petalled forms which are fluffy looking with no dark centre at all.
Sunflowers are annuals, which means they only flower once, then die off, and new seed need to be planted each season. They can grow up to 3 metres tall, but cut sunflowers are rarely over 1 metre.
They are grown as field crops in the cooler areas near Melbourne, Sydney, in Tasmania and in SA and WA.
Language: ‘false riches, ‘pride’
What to look for
- Flowers are 1/2 to fully open;
- Strong stems that support the large flowers;
- Avoid bunches with marks or creases on the leaves.
Flower Care
- Don’t need to be refrigerated.
- Split bunches and strip leaves (if any) from the lower half of each stem.
- Leaves wilt and die before the flowers, so it is an idea to strip as many leaves off as you can.
- Recut at least 2 cm off each stem with sharp secateurs and place in water immediately.
- Preservative is essential – this will help maintain fresh leaves and flowers.
- Replace water every day.
- To help prevent leaf drooping, add 10 drops of detergent to 5 litres of water and place sunflowers in this for 1 to 3 hours, then return to standard preservative.
Interesting Facts about this Flower
The Botanical name comes from the Greek ‘Helios’, meaning sun and ‘anthos’, meaning flower. Although there are references to sunflowers in Greek mythology, it is thought these referred to the heliotrope, as the true sunflower was not imported into Europe until the 16th century.
The flower was cultivated by North American Indians for centuries as a food crop. The Incas revered the sunflower as an image of their sun god. It is still primarily grown in agriculture as a source of oil. It is the state flower of Kansas.
Sunflower stems were used to fill lifejackets before the advent of modern materials.
When in the ground, sunflowers move to face the sun, which is called heliotropism.
